This is the last recording of this year. 2011 has been a crazy year, with starting a new business, trying to get it going, lots of business travels, little free time, and then a 10 stitch wound on thumb on the eve of winter holidays. All in all a good memorable year. Did not get much time to record new or as many songs I wanted, so fell back to my old favorite collections. A year which I started with an old Mukesh song (Chal Re Sajni Ab Kya Soche), and decided to end with another classic Mukesh song, so here it is. This is from 1977 movie Mukti. The lyrics by Anand Bakshi is beautiful, and the music by Rahul Dev Burman is near perfect. The movie acting by Shashi Kapoor is forgettable, so skip the movie clip. Just listen & Enjoy! - Sushil

This is an absolutely great masterpiece of a song from a 2010 movie Veer. I watched the movie clip for this song and it even made Salman Khan's acting look excellent (watch here). Jokes aside, the vocals by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Suzanne D'Mello is out of the world. It is all about effortless singing. I tried quite hard to keep it effortless, but it was near impossible. So here it is, I had to increase my vocal volume a bit to subdue the original vocal bleed that was in the music track, so set the volume accordingly. And of course, I left Suzanne's part as is, that I can't even dream of attempting. So relax, listen and Enjoy! - Sushil

I had to actually go outside my comfort zone a bit for this, like a baritone trying to sing like a tenor. My vocals are still a work in progress, so I wanted to go at this song with as much energy as I could, without sounding out of tune or not melodious. Try to turn up the volume a bit when listening to this one, the vocal effects do not come out as well in low volume, something to do with the mixing, still trying to figure it all out. This is an absolutely great A R Rahman song. For some reason I did not care much about Udit Narayan's singing. He did a good job but his voice just did not fit well with the excellent rhyhmic drum beats of this song. It's been around a month since I attempted any song, was too busy for a while, so I felt a bit rusty while recording this. Also the effects and mixing are still a work in progress. You will notice some improvements from the last song, but I am slowly learning to mix with new tools. Also the music track does not have Mahalakshmi's female vocals which is absolutely fabulous in the original. I felt they were better than Udit Narayan's main vocals. This is another Kumar Sanu to mark the end of year. I promise no more Kumar Sanu songs until end of 2010. Anyway, this song is from the 1991 blockbuster hit movie Saajan. The music directors are Nadeem and Sharavan, and they won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for muic in this movie. This is my second recording with new studio equipments. The previous song was just my attempt to make the microphone work with the setup. In this attempt I have tried some simple mixing, and I also switched to a condensor microphone. It is a very sensitive microphone so it picks up a lot of noise, but vocal details too. Basically, everything is still a work in progress so just bear with me. But the song is so good, you will enjoy this for sure. Just remember to lie on the couch, close your eyes, and let this song do the rest. This is another year end attempt at a Kumar Sanu song. You will notice a big change in the vocals. This is the first song with some improved recording studio equipment and tools. This song is from the movie Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi. I have not seen the movie but the song is quite catchy. Do let me know how the new vocals turned out, it is more natural with minimum effects, as I am still learning the new recording tools. This is another classic Kishore Kumar song from the Dev Anand's famous movie Darling Darling. In the movie Dev Anand does all his classic corny moves and acting, and is quite an effort to watch. But even then the song seems to come alive and excel as it is so good. I heard some remakes of this songs by younger singers but they all sound very flat and lacking the energy that is in the original song. This is a classic Shabbir Kumar song from the 1983 movie Ek Jaan Hain Hum. This is my first attempt at a Shabbir Kumar song. His excellence is quite lost between Mohd. Rafi and now Sonu Nigam, but Shabbir Kumar dominated Bollywood with his Rafi style singing in the 1980s. I always liked his songs, and this one I used to sing all the time. So when a friend asked me to attempt it I decided to try it without listening to the original, from memory. I also tried a slightly different effect on the vocal track for no real reason. This is a classic Lata Mangeshkar song from the 1978 blockbuster movie Muqaddar Ka Sikandar. Everytime I listen to this song it reminds me of the time we celebrated Saraswati Puja in our childhood neighborhoods. This and other songs from the this movie will blast off, from multiple directions in full volume, across all the neighborhoods, all day long and into late nights too. I have to be honest, this could be the reason, why I don't like this song as much. But a friend requested I try this for her, so here it it. I did not need any practice as this song is deeply embedded in my phyche. So I sang it 3 times, and selected the best parts and mixed it all together, even added some extra delayed reflections in the reverb to make it sound like it sounded in my troubled past :-) Hope you all like it. This is a beautiful, melodious and a powerful song by Kay Kay (KK - not sure what his real name is) from the movie Jannat. The song has so many absolutely beautiful harmonics and vibraro effects, and it is done almost perfectly. But the music, is actually not original, and it is a Hindi remake of a Korean (not 100% sure, but some asian country) song. So you have to give the real credit for this, and a few other songs from movie Jannat, to some Korean composer. I really tried hard to do justice to the original as well as I could. It was not easy to sing, none of KK songs are easy, his vocals are so powerful that it is tough to match. This is a re-try. I sang this in Jan 2007, and posted it here, but some of the old links are not working anymore. So I decided to re-sing some of these old attempts, to see my improvement in two years, and for fun too. I see no need to listen to my previous attempt, it is too bad compared to this version, which still falls quite short compared to original song.

This song is absolutely fantastic one from movie Om Shanti Om. The music is composed by Vishal Shekhar, and the everything else like the lyrics, the rhythm, the beats, the tempo, and the singings is all just great. It is a hard song, in that both original singers put so much emotion into their renditions. I left Shreya Ghosal's (female) vocals as is, just sang Sonu Nigam's (male) vocals. I found it extremely calming to listen to. The song uses a lot of high quality effects and harmonies using so it is absolutely impossible to come close to the softness rendered in the vocals. I may try this song again when I acquire this for my recording studio. Till then, this is the absolute best I could produce with my cheap setup. I was definitely an enjoyable to sing. This is a classic ghazal by the great Mehdi Hassan. When it came to singing ghazals with an easy style with an enchanting gruffy voice, Mehdi Hassan is one of the best ever. I never followed his songs religiously, but some of his songs are so good that it pulls you in. This one is one of them. The lyrics is also just out of the world, not sure who wrote them.

I really tried hard to soften this song and match the softness of the original song, but this is the best I could do. No need to compare this to original. Just listen to it as is, otherwise you won't like my version. This I am sure.

The music track is not the best quality, but I think this song turned out just OK. But I did try a completely new recording and mixing steps for this song that I have never tried to add a bit of gruffiness and softness to my voice. Now relax and Enjoy! - Sushil.

This is an excellent song by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. It may be from the movie Namaste London, not sure. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (RFAK), is the successor of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (NFAK). They represent some of the best music schools from Pakistan.
I was basically hoping to try an easier song of his but this is the only music only track I could find. It is an extremely hard song. This is my attempt after listening to this song for a week, followed by practicing for another week, and then trying to record for one more week. This made me realize the limits of my singing and how much more I can improve. It also tested the limits of my cheap recording setup. The music track is also not clean, the original vocal track is not completely removed so one can hear that also. But I had a great time singing and recording it. I will definitely attempt this again, but for now, this is all I could do. I need a lot more practice to perfect this one. I really need to improve my range to get the high notes more clean. I looked for a Sukhwinder Singh song to try, after I heard that he missed performing the award winning piece Jai Ho at the Oscars (from movie Slumdog Millionaire). This song was one that I found, and I loved from the first time I heard it. It is from the movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Once I decided to try it, it took a lot of practice, and trying out different things to get the sound to gel with the music. It look a lot of effort in post production too, specially getting the chorus effects. The singing was tough too because the original singing is very continuous, and very little room to breathe ;-) It was also challenging because I don't speak Punjabi, but love the language and the songs. This is a song from Jagjit Singh's album Sajda. This is a song about sadness and pathos. Lata Mangeshkar's singing is just about as perfect as singing can get for these type of deeply soulful and sad ghazals. The first time I heard this song I had to lay still for a few moments just to absorb the full rendition because my mind still lagged behind, even after the song had ended minutes ago. I did change the ending slightly, leaving the last line unfinished, as a sign of deeper sadness. One has to admire the poet (Qateel Shafai), the musician (Jagjit Singh), and the singer (Lata Mangeshkar). And hopefully, you will admire my effort too, perhaps. Enjoy! - Sushil.

This is a great romantic song from movie Silsila. It contains superb singing by Lata Mangeshkar and even more superb poetry narration by Amitabh Bachchan. I am trying this because an old school buddy of mine asked me to. Probably because he loves the romantic poetry and the song, or maybe he just wanted me to make a fool of myself. In any case, I agreed to try this song, both Lata's female singing and Bachchan's powerful romantic narration. I have never tried dialogs before, so this is new, and it was very hard because Bachchan's dialogs are absolutely the best of all times, and no one has come close to delivering it as well as he does. My other goal was to make sure I don't make a complete and absolute fool of myself. Hopefully I succeded in at least that, hopefully. In fact, after listening and practicing it for over hundred times while I was driving to and back on business trips, I started to like the dialog and narration. It is an art form in itself, probably more powerful than songs, and definitely more difficult to master. I have not worked harder on any one single song than this one, so please listen to the very end. Its at the end, where the harder and more powerful parts are. Song Title: Main Shayar Badnaam
This is a classic Kishore Kumar song from the 1973 movie Namak Haraam. This is from those days when Rajesh Khanna used to be the superstar and Amitabh Bachchan was the sidekick. Times did change after that, but this song has stayed fresh as ever. This was one of my favourite songs from my early childhood and I remember singing this as early as my early school days. The poetry in the lyrics is excellent too, and only in recent days I have started to enjoy the lyrics too. It is an easy song to listen to but was a little difficult to sing in beat. Not sure what taal (beat) it uses, but at times you have to go a bit off beat to reflect the sad and lonely mood of the song. Took me some extra tries to get to this version. Now, lie on your diwan (couch), sip a little jaam (drink), and close your eyes, and Enjoy! - Sushil.

This is the first song of the new year, and this year I have decided to focus on the quality of my renditions. Goal is to keep it clean, mix it well, and add more emotion and style into my vocals. This is an absolutely great song by Mohd. Rafi from movie Suraj. You can watch the original song here @ YouTube. I had a real tough time singing this at the same pace as Rafi's version, so I chose Sonu Nigam's version which is quite a bit slower. I don't think Sonu's version came anywhere close to the original song, but they are both good. I am just trying to make it sound as good as I possibly can in my own style. Hopfully it turned out OK. This is the third Kumar Sanu song from movie Aashiqui. As you may or may not have noticed, I tried to use different effects on the three Aashiqui songs. Let me know which one you liked the most. You will have to somehow go beyond my vocal issues and limitations, and listen deeper and further to figure out which vocal effects worked the best for the song. Song Title: Tu Meri Zindagi Hai
This is one of the many absolutely great songs from movie Aashiqui. This is probably one of the best albums of songs done by Kumar Sanu. The one complain I have is that many of Kumar Sanu's songs, like this one, has been diluted by adding Anuradha Paudwal's female part. I would have preferred if this song was solo or sung separately by the two, and not a duet. In my version I sang both the male and the last female part.

BTW, I started this recording hobby over a year ago with two other songs from the same movie (Ab Tere Bin Jee Lenge Hum and Bas Ek Sanam Chahiye). I plan to re-sing these two again very soon, as I now have better recording equipment, it should come out better. I will have the two other songs done shortly. Now Enjoy! - Sushil.

This is one of my favourite Lata Mangeshkar songs from movie Shakti. The original song in her voice is absolutely one of the best. I also love the lyrics and the poetry contained in the lyrics. I find it quite hard to sing the female vocal songs, but the same challenge is what drives me to it. And the simple fact that some of the songs are so good. The presentation of the song in the movie by Smita Patil is also excellent. You can watch that video at @ YouTube. While singing I started to sway like Smita Patil which was funny. This is an old song by Shailendra Singh from the 1973 movie Bobby. Its is an excellent song, both for its romantic poetry and excellent singing. This is an absolutely fantastic song sung by KK from movie Gangster. It is a very hard song to sing, so took me a while to practice. The ease with which KK hits the high notes is just amazing. I had a long time to practice this as I had a long running cold and soar throat, but this is still the best I could do. I played around with some different effects in parts of the song. The music track has a lot of noise where vocals exist so it may seem my voice was breaking, but some of it was this noise which I could not get rid of. Just turn the volume a bit higher to listen to this song and Enjoy! - Sushil.

Another classic by Kishore Kumar from the movie Mehbooba. I am not sure, but I think this song is based on Raga Shivranjani which is a classic raag to represent romance and sorrow, and what a music piece this is. The music was created by R.D Burman and this song was also sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It is said that Kishore Kumar was hesitant to sing this song due to its high notes, but I am glad he did sing it. I really gave it all I have when I did this song. The song track is a bit slower than original song, I decided to leave it as is. Enjoy! - Sushil.

After a long pause due to recording equipment failure and then I getting too busy completing a work project and some landscaping projects in the frontyard, things have finally started to get back to normal again. This is one of my favourite from the mid 90s. The movie name is same as the song title. The original is actually a duet but I decided to sing the whole song myself. Never liked the female part of the original song by Anuradha Paudwal, nothing against her singing. The male part done by Kumar Sanu was always my favourite.
